Ultrasound Exam: an Ally for Efficient Diagnoses

An ultrasound exam, also known as ultrasonography or echography, is a non-invasive imaging exam that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the inside of the human body.

This procedure does not use ionizing radiation, making it safe and widely used in various areas of medicine.

In everyday life, it is very common to hear about ultrasound for gestational monitoring, but the truth is that because it is an extremely safe imaging exam, ultrasound can be used in various medical specialties, going far beyond the nine months of pregnancy.

What is Ultrasound Used for?

The ultrasound exam is a versatile and indispensable imaging exam in medical practice, being applied in various specialties for diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment guidance.

Thus, through ultrasound it is possible to investigate symptoms such as pain, swelling, and infections in various regions of the body, such as the heart, blood vessels, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, eyes, thyroid and parathyroid glands, breasts, scrotal sac (testicles), kidneys, bladder, uterus, ovaries, and, in pregnant patients, the fetus.

What are the Types of Ultrasound?

The ultrasound exam contributes to various diagnoses and, being so comprehensive, this imaging exam has variations that are suitable for each situation. Learn about the main types of ultrasound.

Contrast-enhanced Ultrasound with Microbubbles

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound with microbubbles is necessary when conventional ultrasound visualization does not meet the doctor’s specific demands during the analysis.
The contrast is widely used in this imaging exam to examine vascular structures, in addition, it identifies blood obstructions, detects aneurysms, and investigates malformations.

Thyroid Ultrasound

This type of ultrasound evaluates the structure of the thyroid gland, helping to identify nodules, cysts, and other anomalies.

Preparation for the exam: no specific preparation is needed.

Preparation for the exam: patients with beards should be clean-shaven and all patients should wear a blouse with a wide collar.

Breast Ultrasound

Used mainly for the detection of breast nodules and cysts, breast ultrasound is an important tool in breast cancer screening.

Preparation for the exam: no specific preparation is needed.

Total Abdomen Ultrasound

This exam evaluates the abdominal organs, such as the liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, and kidneys, helping to diagnose various conditions, such as gallstones, tumors, and inflammations.

Preparation for the exam:

  • Adults: 12 hours of fasting and drink 5 glasses of water 1 hour before the exam;
  • Diabetic adults and children from 6 to 12 years old: 6 hours of fasting and drink water 1 hour before the exam to fill the bladder.

  • Diabetic adults: 6 hours of fasting.
  • Children 6 to 12 years old: 6 hours of fasting.

Scrotal Ultrasound

Used to evaluate the testicles and other structures of the scrotum, this exam helps to identify problems such as testicular torsion, varicocele (dilation of the veins inside the scrotum), and tumors.

Preparation for the exam: no specific preparation is needed.

Pelvic and/or Transvaginal Ultrasound

These exams evaluate the pelvic organs, such as the uterus and ovaries, being fundamental in the investigation of gynecological problems, such as ovarian cysts, myomas, and endometriosis.

Preparation for the exam: it is recommended that the exam not be performed during the menstrual period.

Vascular Ultrasound
