Doppler Ultrasound

Ultrasound Exam: an Ally for Efficient Diagnoses

An ultrasound exam, also known as ultrasonography or echography, is a non-invasive imaging exam that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the inside of the human body.

This procedure does not use ionizing radiation, making it safe and widely used in various areas of medicine.

In everyday life, it is very common to hear about ultrasound for gestational monitoring, but the truth is that because it is an extremely safe imaging exam, ultrasound can be used in various medical specialties, going far beyond the nine months of pregnancy.

What is Ultrasound Used for?

Ultrasound is a versatile and indispensable imaging exam in medical practice, being applied in several specialties for diagnosis, monitoring, and guidance of treatments.

Thus, through ultrasound, it is possible to investigate symptoms such as pain, swelling, and infections in various regions of the body, such as the heart, blood vessels, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, eyes, thyroid and parathyroid glands, breasts, scrotal sac (testicles), kidneys, bladder, uterus, ovaries, and, in pregnant patients, the fetus.

What are the Types of Doppler Ultrasound?

Ultrasound with doppler contributes to several diagnoses, and because it is so comprehensive, this imaging exam has variations that suit each situation. Learn about the main types of doppler ultrasound.

Thyroid Ultrasound with Doppler

This type of doppler ultrasound assesses blood flow in the thyroid gland, thus helping to diagnose diseases such as hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and thyroid nodules.

Preparation for the exam: no special preparation is required to perform this exam. However, the neck area must be uncovered. We recommend that the patient wear comfortable clothes that leave the neck area free. In addition, it is necessary to remove necklaces or adornments that are in the area.

Doppler Ultrasound of the Renal Arteries

Used to assess blood flow in the renal arteries, this exam can detect arterial stenosis (narrowing), helping to diagnose renovascular hypertension (high pressure in the blood vessels of the kidneys). In addition, the exam can detect other kidney conditions.

Preparation for the Exam:

It will be necessary to ingest dimethicone (medication that helps eliminate gases). Take 2 tablets or 40 drops of the medication after dinner and another dose before bed.

Diet:

Regarding the diet: you should not ingest fatty foods, milk, soda, and acidic fruits.

On the Day of the Exam:

The patient should not urinate until after the exam is performed. In addition, they should take the indicated dose of dimethicone in the morning and after lunch. Regarding the diet on the day of the doppler ultrasound exam: an 8-hour fast is necessary (or 4 hours for diabetics) and drink 5 glasses of water 1 (one) hour before the exam.

Ultrasound with Doppler of the Carotid Arteries

Doppler ultrasound assesses blood flow in the carotid arteries, which are the main arteries in the neck that supply blood to the brain. It is fundamental in the prevention and diagnosis of strokes (CVA).

Preparation for the exam: patients with beards should be clean-shaven and all patients should wear a blouse with a wide collar.

Doppler Ultrasound of the Breasts

Used to assess blood flow in breast tissues, this exam can help in the detection of tumors and in the differentiation between benign and malignant lesions.

Preparation for the exam: no specific preparation is needed.

Ultrasound with Doppler in the Legs

Doppler ultrasound assesses blood flow in the veins and arteries of the legs, being essential for diagnosing varicose veins, thromboses, and peripheral arterial diseases.

Preparation for the exam: no specific preparation is needed.

Total Abdomen Ultrasound with Color Doppler Study

Exam that evaluates the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, spleen, aorta, vena cava, and study of the flow of these vessels.

Preparation for the exam:

Adults:

Preparation for doppler ultrasound begins 24 hours before the exam:

    • Take 40 drops of Luftal every 6 hours.
  • Diet:
    • Drink only water.
    • Do not ingest juices, sodas, coffee, and sugar (use sweetener).

      • Child from 4 to 7 years old: 6-hour fast.
      • Child from 7 to 12 years old: 8-hour fast.

Penile Doppler Ultrasound with Drug-Induced Erection

Penile Doppler Ultrasound is an essential exam to assess blood circulation in the penis, being fundamental in the diagnosis of erectile dysfunction. It identifies problems such as arterial insufficiency, venous leakage, and other vascular changes that can affect erectile function.

In addition, the exam helps in the investigation of Peyronie’s disease, penile fracture, penile tumors, and priapism. When performed with drug-induced erection, it allows a detailed analysis of the vascular response, simulating an erection.

Preparation for the exam: the exam does not require fasting, but it is recommended to avoid the use of medications for erectile dysfunction in the 24 hours prior. Comfortable clothes are indicated, and it is important to inform the doctor about medications of continuous use.
